Student PIRGS has gotten some traction with this report, which concludes that bundled access codes are contributing to the high cost of textbooks. It's been noticed by a number of news outlets: CBS Moneywatch, Denver's ABC News affiliate, The Atlantic. Too many to list really. It seems like a well-coordinated press effort to get the word out.
If OER is a subject you follow, then this won't seem like such a revelation to you. Access codes are an obvious and rather shameful strategy by publishers to keep students captive to their ecosystem, and to preserve the pricing power of that system.
